Hey guys, back in February I bought a 2004 530i. So far it's been awesome, but I noticed that it consumes alot of oil. Im going through a liter of oil for roughly 1500 km. Is this normal? I dont think it is. When I asked a BMW Individual shop if this was okay, he said around 80,000 km the cam shaft seal needs to be replaced and better sooner than later which is roughly a 500-600 dollar job. So then I went to another BMW Individual shop that a friend recommended to me and the guy there told me "why would you need to replace it?" he also said that it is normal for an e60 engine to go through a liter of oil every 2000 kms. So I am completely lost here and dont know what to do. What can you guys tell me about the oil consumption problem? Do you guys go through a liter of oil in about 1500/2000 kms? If so, then this must be a normal thing?
And one more thing..What oil do you guys recommend to use. The dealership says to use Total 90 which is LL-04, but then on the oil cap of my car it says that BMW recommends Castrol.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

A liter every 1500 kilometer seems like excessive oil consumption to me.

My car is newer with less km on it but in the past 11 months, I've put on 8000km (~5000mi) with no oil and iDrive says oil is full.

My Ride: 2006 525i with nav and blue tooth , the wifes
and 1999 740il, my beast
Obviously you are either leaking or using too much oil...I change oil in my 99 740il every 6000 miles without having to add any oil....I change oil in my Ford Explorer (v6 engine) every 5000 miles without having to add any oil in between oil changes and I don't know yet about my 2006 525i because I have only had it for 2 weeks!!.....I bet you are leaking oil. Remove the plastic cover under the engine and park over a clean surface and see if you don't see oil drips?
