I searched DIY forum but couldn't find any answers. sorry if this is a re-post.
I did an oil change yesterday on my 06 530i, filled her with 6.8 quarts of Mobil1 0W-40 oil, started the car and drove it for a distance of about a mile until i-drive displayed that the engine oil level is at minimum and I need to add a quart. Pulled in to my garage, I put in about 0.5 quart of oil and did samething, drove for about a mile until i-drive finally displayed that oil level is at maximum. Now, manual and TIS states that engine oil capacity with oil filter change is 6.9 quarts. Why did my i-drive displayed that it was at minimum after I put almost 6.9 quarts in my engine and can it hurt my motor because I put total of 7.3 quarts of oil in it?

Pull the dipstick out and make sure its below the "max fill" line. Screw driving around untill the iDrive kicks on.

<joke on>
Drive hard, rev. the engine, it will burn the excess oil soon.
<joke off>
6.9 v.s. 7.3, it is not much excess, I would not worry about it. If you really want, just get some oil out from oil filter housing.
I really doubt how accurate these oil level sensor will be...... I have new 2009 535xi.
First Oil change; 7qt. iDriver show full at Maximum.
Second Oil change; 6.5qt iDriver still show full at Maximum.
I am going to start with 6 qt in my next oil change to see how it goes. I really want to test how much oil there when the indicator starts with one or two bars in the iDriver indicator.

There's no dipstick, it's N52 engine, no dipstick on the options list

(But remember to always change the engines oil bolt gasket when opened!
And damned those historic US measurements
When will the metric system find the new continent
