My Ride: My Bimmer's info is in my sig, so I'll tell you about my garage toy. It's a 1997 Porsche Boxster. The car is black on black and I have replaced every single thing on the car (interior, exterior, drivetrain, suspension) except for the sheet metal and the convertible top (both of which will be next I guess). I love my Pcar more than any other car I have ever owned and will probably keep it for the rest of my life. Porsche. There is no substitute.

BMW's annual or 15k interval for oil changes is preposterous. I'll take them up on the freebie I get once a year or every 15k, but I plan to change my oil myself between those intervals considering I plan to keep my 550i for many, many years.

What size oil filter tool must I buy for a 07 550i?

How many quarts of synthetic oil does it take with a filter change?

first off.. to the forum. Good choice in changing the oil prior to 15K since you own and not lease. Most recc an oil change about 1/2 way to that...

second...the upper right search bar is a useful tool as there a re a few diy's on this..like this one for a 2008 550i

doubt there is much difference

I think every 5k miles, everyone should change it. (If you own the car of course). If you lease, don't bother. But if you're planning to buy your lease, make sure you change the oil around 5k, since its synthetic.

Also, I've got a 04 530i, I think its the M54 engine and it takes 7 quarts of oil. I just changed it yesterday, that's how I remember.

Whoops, I'm an idiot, you've got a 550i, so its probably 8-9 quarts.

Researching around the net on the various forums for BMW and some of the oil forums. It seems like are BMW's are usually good for around 7K to 10K tops with the recommended oil. These are based on some of the oil guru tests and blackstone tests. If search Blackstone on here I'm sure you'll find a few threads about this. I'd never let it go to 15Kish weather I was leasing it or owning it.

I believe its 8.5 quarts.

I agree, anywhere from 7.5k to 10k is a good interval but 5k is too soon for synthetic.
Regards.

5K change is for those compulsive / anal-retentive people.

I'm guilty of that.

I like to do mine at about 7k to 8k. About mid way to the BMW recommendation.

I think 7.5k or 8k would fall smack between BMW recommended maintainence. With 10k changes, you would be due for it after 5k the next time. Its easier to do 7.5k but if your car is out of free maintainence, then 10K should be fine.
