I just bought 2 x 4L castrol edge 0w30, and a filter, costing 90 uk pounds, my local indie guy is a pal and i teach his kid guitar so he'll only charge me £20 to do it. works out at us$170. the local bmw dealer would charge at least twice that so you guys ain't doin so bad...and you get gas way cheaper than we do.

These threads never cease to make me shake my head in disbelief.

Oil change for my 530i = $65.

At 15k miles I captured a sample of oil from my 550 and send it in for analysis. The oil analysis lab said that given the oil type, age, miles driven, the oil could be used for an additional 5k miles. That's 20k miles between changes for me.

7,500 to 10,000 is good for folks who make lots of short trips.

As far as cost... you can DIY oil change for around $80.
There's little doubt a synthetic oils can maintain its fluid properties past 20,000 miles if maintained properly. As for the BMW oil filter, my mechanic says it looks like crap at 15,000 miles. My claim is that I've driven my car for nearly 3 years with a short daily commute and not once did my iDrive calculated an oil change interval below 15,000 miles. As you are probably aware, short trips cause oil, both conventional and synthetic, to sludge. I've spoken to several BMW mechanics who have removed valve covers and seen the sludge build up.

No contest. Short trips are better done by walking or biking!

The idea of 3-5k oils changes just bugs me. Thanks!

BMW stealership here (Harold Zeigler BMW) charges $185 for an oil/filter change.

Indy shop does it for $100.

Classic BMW: $180, while you wait (2009).

It's odd that there is so much variation in pricing. Labor rates can't be that different for a simple job.
