Well it seemed easy enough. Oh well. So everything went smoothly right up to the point I tried to take out the drain plug. I have read that it is an 8mm hex for my car. So I put in in gave a little pull and then pulled harder and bam, stripped it out. I am thinking maybe it was supposed to be an 8mm torx bit? Anybody have any ideas please chime in because for now I am screwed. Changing the oil filter was really easy but unfortunately it didn't do me a lot of good.
I've had good success with this type of extractor in "allen head" type screws. If you've rounded an 8mm socket you're somewhere between 11/32 and 3/8.
I would get both sizes just to be safe.

Tap on the extractor with a hammer as you turn. This helps drive it into the plug and the impact will help break it loose.

Good luck. And when you get it off replace it with this.

isnt it you who suggested welding? not a hard job?

1. go down to your local tool store, purchase a welder for $800
2. lug it home.
3. learn how to tig weld. this should probably be performed on the OIL PAN of your 60K car
4. ensure your car insurance, health insurance and god forbid your life insurance is current.
5. WELD away. try not to catch your car on fire with your open flames on flammible substance. remember, oil ignites at 500 degrees. your welder is creating heat around 5000

...or you can hammer a bit in there. that should take about 20 seconds, the bit costs 2 dollars and well... i have seen a monkey hammer something.

but yeah, go with the welding idea

I had a similar problem when changing my brother's car break. It had a hex screws and I strip it. Then I used a hand file and put a two plat surfaces on the outside of the hex bolt. This gave me enough surface to us a adjustable ranch to take out the screw.

Don't kill yourself-- figuratively or literally. I assume you would put the car ramps in the garage w/ very little space to move under the car. Bite the bullet and take it to an independent BMW shop where they will put it on the lift. From there, it should be an easy fix (and they can complete the oil change and upgrade the plug while it's up there, too.) PUNT!

Its a Torx bit you need. Also, the tap and die method is the only solution I can think of without screwing something up.
