Thumbs down

Hey everyone,

I am coming up on an oil change soon (my iDrive says I have 7,000 miles left, but I want to do it sooner), and also I will not be driving the car for upto two weeks... does it make more sense to change the oil before the car is 'stored' for a few weeks, or after?

Thanks!

do it before, 2 weeks isnt really storing the car IMO. Id rahter have clean oil pumped through the engine then sit. Then after 2 weeks, you can drive with no problems. If you were really storing the car for months, then doing one before and after is nice, but the after isnt completely required

I have a '69 GTO convertible that unfortunately gets stored for 5 months a year (winter sucks). I change the oil before putting it away each year, but have to agree that a few weeks doesn't count as storage so it really wouldn't matter.

I do understand that two weeks isn't really 'storage', but I'm trying to determine if it's best to change the oil before having the car sit for a while or after.

do it before if storing the car for a long time.
BTW 2 weeks is long at all. I always leave my car over a month with out driving it.
1 thing to do if you leave it for a long time unplug the battry

As per other replies 2 weeks doesn't count.

If storing for say 6 months, I would change the oil after storage as it would likley have moisture from condensation due to temperature fluctuations.

Importantly, during storage, you need to bring the engine up to temperature once a month if not once a week.

Two weeks is nothing... do it at your convenience.

I've always believed the exact OPPOSITE. THe hardest thing you can do to a car is start it when it's not necessary. I've had several cars/motorcycles that I've stored for the winters (currently a Z4 and a BMW K1200 R Sport motorcycle) and pull both batteries and keep them inside the house for the winter.

You never want to start a vehicle just to start it....that's actually counter-productive. If storing for 6 months then let it hibernate.

TWO weeks? Please, go away and not worry. When you come back, decide what it is about your driving that may be escaping the BMW computer (I suspect not much) and then decide.

Relax,
Ray
