But you don't need to do it.
It's the same with the brake-in rules. You don't need to follow the brake-in rules, and it doesn't hurt the engine. But it's better to do it.
I only use 100 octane gas. It doesn't hurt the engine, maybe it's good for the engine, maybe not. Driving with "usual" premium gas is definately OK too.
If you feel better changing the iol more oftne than the computer tells you, then do it.

I was told by a mechanic that BMW's come pre broke in and really don't need a break in oil change, but personally I would not hold much stock in that remark, has anyone else heard that remark before?
I changed my oil at 4000 miles. When I saw the dirty oil drain out of the car, it's money well spend.

With modern machining tolerances most parts of the engine don't need to be 'broken in'.
The piston rings however do need to bed in or you will get high oil consumption. I know you don't have diesel engines, but they are the worst due to high compression. Synthetic oils are now so good that if you don't let it run to full intervals, for the first change at least, the rings won't bed properly.
After 20 or 30k you can start changing more often if you want to minimise further wear.
