Hi !

I've reached about 1200 miles and need an oil-change, which oil should I use (I'm in Florida, hot all around the year) & how much should an oil change labor cost being a voluntary one that is not covered by the regular maintenance plan.

Thanks.

Go to Auto Zone and purchace (on my 530i it's 7 ) quarts of oil..I use Castrol 0w-30 (made in Germany) and widely assumed to be the factory fill, and go on line and get a good quality filter such as Mann, and you've got maybe 45-50 bucks total. I'm lucky to have an independent who only charges me $10 labor, so in conclusion, around 60 bucks.

Do you need an oil change at 1200 miles by your own decision or did you car's computer indicate such?
My car gave such a message about the same time and it was a mistake. In four months I have had the check engine light now go off 4 times indicating excessive auto emissions. It has been determined that there is a bug in my computer software and my dealer is awaiting an upgrade patch from BMW.

I did the same and my dealer charged $80, including oil and labor. To change or not to change oil early has been much discussed here. As I bought my car as opposed to leasing it, I am hoping to keep it for a long time, so I view the $80 bucks a small investment in maintaining my car. If I were leasing and turning it back in after 3 yrs., no way I do anything other than what the onboard computer says...

An early oil change certainly wouldn't hurt as long as it's done properly.

Own and decided not to change until regular scheduled maintenance. Went to two different BMW shops and both said changing early could actually do some harm. Sounded like some bullshit, figured the dealer was trying to save money, so I talked to my 32 yr motopool mechanic chief here at my army base. He told me do not change it! Gave me a story about minerals, and blah, blah, blah.. Bottom line is I trust his guidance because he deals with life and death if shit brakes down, so his answer is the no BS one. This works from me, but to each his own...

He also advised Castrol.
