My Ride: BMW E60 520i, model May 2004, Bi-Xenon, sport leather seats, professional navigation, sun-roof, vocal commands, parktronic etc...
Default

Hello again my friends. When I bought my car, a E60 520i there was a complete check at the BMW service and they had the oil changed. On my board computer it sais that I still have 19.000 km to go before changing the oil. What do you all recommend? Should I wait until the computer sais it's time to change the oil or should I change it sooner?
Thanks in advance.

YES! You could also change the oil sooner and the reset the consumables by yourself...but is better to do it when "smarty" iDrive say so!

+1. let the dealer do it. the oil doesnt need to be changed too often. also because there may come a time when that smarty idrive will be asking you to add a liter of oil from time to time also.

btw, welcome and enjoy the forums.

Do a little research, there are some lengthy debates on this one. I will keep my opinion to myself as to not start another (lengthy debate that is)

+1.

Check out bobistheoilguy.com

Lots of debate. Bottom line is that todays oils are better than your Father's oils. The search function is also your friend!

I change my about every 7000km which is 2 times a year about.
I dont trust the computer.

I think it will not harm the engine if you change it earlyer but if you change it later it will.
some 1 post these pics so I let you deside if you change your oil sooner or later.

I dunno about those pics - but when I had my valvetronic levers replaced last year, and saw the heads - they were clean as a whistle after 22000km. The 30000km change, as per BMW, sounds about right to me.

Both metallurgy, manufacturing (robots) and oils have developed huge in the last 10 years!

Just look at the BMW 2.4 litre V8 F1 engine, some 19,000 rews and about 850 hp.

Link to them.

I was wondering why there may come a time when the smarty asks to add a liter of oil from time to time. It happened to me after 6.000 km from the oil change. My car has 113.000 km. Is that normal? Do I have a problem or not?

The N series engines are infamous for that, but I don't understand why only some cars are prone to the add 1 litre of oil syndrome
