Does anyone know of any BMW official documentation that lists the oil capacities of the various e60 engines? The question is geared towards my friends e60 535i. I haven't found any on-line with some basic searching.
Also - since there is no dipstick - does BMW recommend how much oil to add per "notch" on the iDrive oil level display? That is, if the iDrive oil display is down one notch does that equate to total capacity divided by the number of notches?
Thanks in advance!

crankcase oil capacity = 7 qts. in the car you referenced. i would suggest that your friend contact his/her SA and pose the "notch" question. if his idrive is showing something other than "full", the i would add a 1/2 qt. of oil incrementally. IMO >>> if he has more than 7500 miles clocked on the oil, then i would do a complete change, rather than possibly using an added quart instead. getbmwparts.com has a fairly good deal on oil change package at the moment, if you DIY.

Every time I got a low oil warning, all I did was add 1Qt and the level went back up to "high".
The only time I add oil was when I get the warning.

The manual clearly states the procedure for using the iDrive oil level reporting system. It is not a "real time" oil level sensing system. You only add when you get the "low" warning.
