I'm with Aybeesea in that we need to stop guessing. A copy of the whole letter might help.
That said, there is a campaign going around to visually inspect the bushing on the rear shocks of some E60's built in early '06.

Ahem, this thread IS about guessing. That's what he is asking for.
And that's another possibilty, that they mean, they have to visually check (control by optic ) something. Then it could be everything...

Finally got all the info from BMW France concerning this official letter from BMW:
there IS a condensation problem within the headlights on some E60 manufactured end of 2005 (They did'nt give me alll the details - I personally had my 2 headlights replaced 1 month after delivery as I has complained of condensation to my dealer (see my earlier post in this forum under the heading "condensation in headlights" http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=...l=condensation).
Well, there is now at least a National (maybe European?) and official control on the E60 regarding this issue; If condensation is indeed detected (as was in my car) both headlights are replaced (1 day of work);
This finally explains the "optic bodies" (bad bad bad translation, sorry again....)
Cheers folks !

I suspect it it the SZL steering angle sensor as the optics are bad in it. Quick search of SZL will give you LOTs of info.
When it fails it will trigger a bunch of other systems to fail too like DSC, ACC, AS and all the other systems that rely on it (which is basically all).
If it fails the car will be driveable but without all the electronic (support) systems and your dash will be lit up like a Christmas tree with all the warning lights on
Haven't heard of people who were having troubles with it but it seems to be a serious issue since they ask in the letter to make an appointment ASAP.
