I'll keep you guys updated - I'm sending in a sample of my used Mobil 1 oil to the labs and will send a sample of the OEM oil when it gets worked out properly.
best oil for BMW Castrol +1

Why would you run OW-30 when the engine is asking for SAE 5W-30?

0 is the cold viscosity
30 is operating temp viscosity

0w30 lubricates better during cold start compare to 5w30
At operating temperature, both 0w30 or 5w30 has the same protection at 30 weight

I don't know. You guys are really all just jumping in with all these numbers and that's confusing. As a matter of fact, that's what got me to go the M1 route in the first place - the fact that there are SO many opinions about oil on this board. In fact, it is very simple: GET THE OEM RECOMMENDED ONE. End of story.

Oil's weight is not the biggest issue......the oils SPEC is the most important! LL-04 is the latest spec for BMW and any oil meeting this spec regardless of viscosity is an approved oil! Viscosity is more of an issue for temperature conditions!
