How can someone make sure that the odometer on a private owned BMW is not tampered with? Don't they sell equipment on the black market that allows reprograming or disconnecting of the odometer? How do I know I bought one that has not been "adjusted". I'm just getting suspicous of my 530i, it's 2006 and has 28,000 miles, and I think I got a great deal, but now I wonder.

Near virtually impossible to "roll back" the miles on a e60. There are multiple locations where the miles are kept one being in the key fob itself. If you're not convinced the miles are correct take the car in for servicing and the SA will let you know for sure.

What has you concerned? Not an expert but I'm sure the equipment you describe is available somewhere..

First, you can ask the owner for the schedule manintenance under BMW waranty where you can check the millage and dates registered there. Also with the key in any BMW dealer they can tell you how many real miles the car have it. Remember to check that this key have been using lately with the car.

its not that difficult to change the milage. but it is also dificult to know if it has been changed. from what i remember all you need to modify in order for compelete milage modification are 3 parts.. CAS, odometer, and keys.. all these have to be re adjusted and then its over, i think the best method is to ask the dealer for the cars history and take alook at the pervious owners driving habits. then judge for yourself if he may have driven more than the history says. keep in mind he may have sent the car to service at 40,000 miles before adjusting it and selling it, so it may be possible to know from that...

a late model E36 M3 high profile color in NJ has been tampered with, if anyone is in the market to buy one, perhaps you should double check the computer settings THOROUGHLY!!! That member has at least a couple of profiles on this site, and has the expensive computer systems (2 of them) to allow such NO NO action to take place,so I'd be very careful

Actually, the dealer can tell you straight off if the odometer has been tampered with. The old owner would have surely done some CIP upgrade. During the upgrades, the DME will record the date and the mileage of the time of upgrades. By accessing the DME, the dealer can tell if the odo has been tampered with. There is also the light module which keeps tabs of the odo reading. If not done right, tampering with the odo will screw up the car electronics and the car can't start.
