ive got a 550 with step, and occasionally at slow speeds when the engine is lugged a bit, I will hear a grinding/struggling/lugging noise. It easy to fix the problem by pushing the throttle more so the car will downshift. It usually happens when cruising at a constant speed, then you go up a hill, or speed up a little while not wanting the engine from downshifting. Ive never heard this kind of noise from an auto, as they usually downshift before the engine strains but the 550 appears to allow this to happen. The car also makes odd gurgling and whiney noises at sub 10mph speeds...anyone else?

Yup, exact same thing. Usually happens when i drive up my street about 20km/hour, slight uphill grade. Only happens in D when I move the stick to DS its gone (because of the increase revs as you say).

What RPM is it at when it makes those funny noises? 1200 and 2400? I'm asking cuz at those speeds at least the 545 engine has some built in harmonic vibrations... very slight... so its probably true for the 550 too...

Run a test for me... in neutral slowly rev the engine to 1200 and up to 2400 and hold it there and compare the engine vibrations above and below those points... report back...

Even consider filling a cup of water little less than half full and holding it against the center arm rest/console and watch how the water vibrates... it shouldn't be jumping all over the place in the cup.

There use to be an OLD OLD thread talking about harmonic vibrations against the 545 engine and couple people did this test... thats why I'm asking you to do the same and report back.

Yep, I have the same problem with my 550i. Dealer said they filed a PUMA with BMW...still waiting on a response from BMW.

Oh... please post results when you get your car back.

Another thing is... this problem almost, maybe, kind of sounds like it might have something to do with the dreaded rough idle issue thats been haunting some E60s.
