There are bundles on eBay that include the cable, DIS, SSS, NCSExpert at a much lower price. Plus, it's a more commonly used software (as far as non-dealer use is concerned) so there is a lot of forum support on it.

I also would like to get a obd2 code reader, but after exploring on ebay they range
from 36.00 to 1500.00...who has experience in this department? I dont mind spending a little
to get the correct one for our cars.

Get a OBD2 USB cable. If you already have a laptop, get INPA and you can do all the diag stuff you want!
I actually spent quite a long time acquiring INPA, NCSExpert, etc and getting them all to work properly. There are a lot of bad downloads out there that are missing pieces.
I'm actually working on putting together a VMWare image with INPA, NCSExpert, and TIS all installed and running.
Should save people a lot of trouble, and hopefully enable a lot more to code their own functions and stuff.
No ETA on the vmware image yet though. Still trying to make it as small and compact as possible.

the main thing to consider in a cable is its speed..i am using ScanTool.net OBDLink Bluetooth + USB (http://www.scantool.net/obdlink-bluetooth.html)
i previously bought a cheap obd2 cable from ebay but got rid of it within days because of speed issues..the ScanTool OBDLink Bluetooth + USB works with both PC and Android phones..i regularly use it with Torque application on my android..highly recommended
