I'm surprised you were able to get a car in there at all - that place is pretty tight. I've only been there during the day, but it looks like you were there at night - I'm sure it's a very different place when all the tourists leave.
One of my clients sent me all over the world, and out of all the places they sent me, Brussels is really the only place I'd be happy to pay for myself. To anyone reading this and going to Brussels: when they say the 12:20 train is the one that goes to Br?gge, they mean it - the 12:15 train is not the "early Br?gge train" that you may think it is.

+1 ... Brugge is a firm favourite of my wife and I (and only 2.5 hours away from us). We've managed to get our previous E39 and current E60 in and out of there with no problems at all (other than trying to avoid the tourists who shuffle along just about every surface, including the road).
Pity you detoured south west rather than south east - had you detoured south east, you may have bumped into us at the Benelux meet in Maastricht/Aachen: http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=43360
