I'm 100% sure it was'nt there when I parked it the night before but when I went to go to the dentist (root canal!) the next day, it stood out like a sore thumb!! I went straight to my dealer for an estimate: $2000!!!! ouch, that pain was worst than the dentist. BMW labor portion is $1200!!! I was hoping to have it covered under warranty, which they said occasionally happens, but in my case, the service manager showed me a needle sized rock chip that he says caused it to crack. Just a fraction of an inch to the left and it would have hit the molding. He said the rain sensors make it expensive.

I don't think repair is an option on these types of cracks, I may be wrong? I think replacing is ultimately the best fix but I really don't want to turn in a claim on my insurance but will if I have to. Anyone know of a good windshield company either near the Irvine Spectrum or in Chatsworth? Your suggestions are welcome...

Have your insurance fix it for you. I paid only 100 to have it replaced by Safelite. They used OEM windshield and there is no problem with my rain sensor. Only took them 45 min. to replace.

I don't know but if it were me I would try and get a second opinion on the cause of this crack. There have been many posts over the last 2 years about stress fractures of the windshield's on E60's, and many of these type of cracks started at the side molding, just like in your picture. I suggest that you take the car to a windshield specialist and get their opinion.

I have changed my windshield once due to a bad chip from a rock which hit while I was on the highway, it felt like a boulder hit it. Anyways, I drove with it for two months and it never developed into a crack. My current windshield has many tiny chips on it which are hard to see and no cracks have appeared.

I am curious, does the crack extend under the side molding?

The crack starts from aprox. 1/16" just right of the molding. The weird thing is I know it wasn't there when I parked and I park on the driveway to the side of my house...that day all the way in so it was protected on both sides. Something drop from the sky? or extreme cold and heat???

Stress Fracture? Do a search on "windshield" you will find a few posts of this happening to people and BMW
replaced under warranty. I could understand if you lived in a cold climate and in the morning you put on your defroster and the crack appeared, but if it was not there when you parked the car it does not make sense that it happened while your car was parked.

On my car, I had the dealership fix the cloth on the A Pillar and in the process they cracked the windshield and replaced it under warranty. But since then I think I have a problem with my rain sensor. I tried activating it but it just wont work now. It was raining pretty hard the other day and when I turned the rain sensor on (pressing the "a" button with green light on) my wipers just don't move.

Also does our car have an intermittent wiping feature? It only do intermittent when the car is not moving.

All is good now!!!! Insurance covered the replacement less $95 deductable. There's a BMW logo on the glass so I'm assuming it's factory parts. No problem with rain sensors, still works. I asked the repairman what they were charging the insurance company, he said aprox. $450 and he was blown away when I told him BMW wanted $2000.
