So, about 4 weeks from now I'll be buying my first BMW, a 2006 525i w/ a manual tranny and wouldn't mind some extra opinions on it.

Is 215HP really that insufficient?

There's never enough hp's when you are young and when there is, it's often too much...

Have you driven the 525? It's impossible to answer unless you have driven the car then decide. For some it will be more than enough, other will want more.

that is very true. my 535 doesnt cut it. maybe a JB3 can fix that for a short period of time. i could get an M5 and that would suffice for a few months...

I have the same year and model. I think your satisfaction will have a lot to do with what you're coming out of. I came out of an 06 330i, which had 260 hp. It is quite a difference. IMO, for this size and weight of vehicle, the car probably needs at least 240-260hp. But other then that, this car excels over the 3 series in just about every other way. You will have an advantage if you do stick with the MT....I wish I had done that. Good luck with your decision.

First of all, congrats on your purchase! These cars are like no other on the road!

I have an 07 525i with a manual, and I can't say enough good about it. To me, the power/handling is more than enough to have some fun in. Since you got the manual you will be able to take full advantage of the engine and how smooth it is all the way up to 7k

Here is a test. When the light turns from red to green, floor it up to 7k, up to 2nd gear and floor it again up to 7k again. If that engine sound and rush doesn't make you smile, I don't know what will!

Here is another test. On a nice twisty country road, drive in 2nd gear only and try to keep your breath... .
