It not an alignment problem Scott, my rears were much more cambered inward when I had the 125's on there than the 172's. the 172's seem to flatten out the negative camber much better than other wheels. With the 125's the negative camber was VERY noticeable, with the 172's? Barely perceptible.
+1
If the wheels are properly balanced and inflated - then the camber settings would be the cause of excessive uneven tire wear.

I'd also have your suspension checked as well. The severe cupping on the inside of your tires can be attributed to worn shocks, and BMW's OEM shocks have very poor durabilty IMHO.

I had exactly the same problem with 2 KUMHO ECSTAs at the rear.

One of them actually went flat and when I saw the reason (the wear) I was shocked. Fortunately enough, this was at very slow city traffic in the morning after a 800 km highway blast at 140-180 kmh the night before. When I imagine what could have happened I break in sweat.

I had perfect alignment and tyre pressure. I still dont know the reason. But I suspect its a combination of tyres and driving style (mostly highway).

Now I have Pirelli P Zero at the back, they are asymmetrical, with smaller channels (more rubber) at the inner side of the wheel, and with a strange belt of darker and much more solid rubber around the tyre close to the inner edge. I suspect this hard rubber belt is there to slow the wear on the inside of the tyre. In any case, I don't notice any uneven tyre wear on these tyres after 15,000 km of again mostly highway driving. Alignment has not been changed.

I agree that the inside wear is beyond the typical normal inside wear.
The low tire pressures may have caused that, especially if you frequently have rear passengers and a loaded trunk.

I'd run 35 front, 39 rear. Definitely more than you have been but not clear at the max.

I ran between 32 and 35 and had excessive inside and outside wear.

On the money as usual Richard.

Overinflation equals excessive wear in the middle of the tire.

Underinflation equals excessive wear on the inner and outer edges of the tire.

Its not just the psi - if both the inner and outer parts of your tire were worn evenly then you could say the prob is due to improper inflation.

The pics clearly show the radial belts on one side and not on the other (althout it's bald). This suggests something is off with your suspension (including camber settings). It could be the Dunlops - my Pirellis have over 20k on the road and they are nowhere near as worn as your tires, but they are evenly worn.

Whenever I get new front tires on my Camaro I have to give specific camber settings to the tech because the GM factory settings are incorrect, which also causes the the fronts to wear unevenly.

Whatever you do, GL!

Interesting. The rear OEM summer Contis on my 172 wore very evenly. Shocking to see how much faster the inside of the OP's tires got shot.

Hmm, maybe this is another reason to keep your 172s.

Agreed, as more time passes I am leaning more towards powdercoating rather than selling them. I want wheels that contrast with my car's color so I may end up just PC-ing the 172's (and also taking Mel's suggestion of some 10mm spacers all around)

I have never seen powdercoated 172s so it will be cool to see yours if you do it.
