I am not sure about normal. But, it did not happen with my car. I assume that you know exactly where your car started.

If we are talking about the first 1000 miles then yes that is not unusual.
After that then I should think not.

I was just wondering if it's normal to be burning half a quart of oil in under a thousand miles?

I just had the vavle levers replaced at 11500 miles. Had to take car back to the dealer cause it was running rough and still clattering.

Did you drive nicely during brake in period?

It's not normal when burning half a quart of oil in such short distance.

The sixinlines do not need a litre of oil after some 1600 km.

i think i drove nicely.
But seriously, there are some differances in the engines,
talk with your dealer about this.
I'm ready to put in a litre at around 12.000 km's (8.000 now).

I am suspecting you are using too thin of an oil. I had this symptom in my 3.8 M5 and it disappeared when I shifted to 15W-40.
