Hi,

I just got my first BMW - a 2007 525i and I have a question that I'm certain that all you experienced BMW folks know the answer to. In the manual mode, the car starts off in 2nd gear, not 1st; to get to 1st a manual downshift is required. Is there some way to have the transmission re-programmed in order to have a 1st gear start?

Thanks.

No, it is designed this way 'for smoother stop start driving' according to BMW.

For a first gear start you need to knock it into DS mode or 'manual'

Similar down under, no 5 series in manual transmission. You have to "drop" down to a 3 series if you want a manual transmission.

Sorry perhaps I wasn't completely clear. My car has a steptronic; I was referring to driving in the manual ("M") mode on that tranmission - i.e. whenever one comes to a complete stop, say at a red light, it automatically downshifts to 2nd, not to 1st. To get to 1st a manual shift is required. My query is whether this can be reprogramed, so that it automatically downshifts to 1st when one comes to a stop.

The short answer is no, there is not a way to reprogram the the car to drop all the way to 1st unless BMW (or the maker of the transmission) decides and rewrites the software. Doubt it will happen anytime soon.

A 545 or 550 step. will start from 3rd in M mode unless you sellect a lower gear.
