Knowing how software for anything is rarely ever left untampered with in this day and age, will it be a matter of time before someone attempts to hack into the I-Drive software and rewrite their own sort of program? Of course this will probably void warranties and potentially be disastrous should someone botch the software. This leads to another question - how integrated is I-Drive with the other main ECU functions of the car? Would tampering with I-Drive lead to failure of critical components?

Just some questions, not that I am considering this at all since I don't have the programming background.

I remember seeing some hacks to expand the ISO image to a larger IDE drive and to skip the 30 seconds commercial.

seriously, I dont think there is non OEM i drive software out there. Even if it is available, i strongly not recommend you to install it to your car..since she has a lot of gimmicks that need to be tested and compliant with the idrive..or ..your DINk DINK sound will come out regularly.

It's doable, but impossible. It's not worth it to the programmer unless he has the source code and know every single function of the car very well.
