Hey Guys, I wanted to 'bump' this post in hopes that someone out there has a TSB on this issue. Wondering if anyone has had their dealer resolve this steering noise and if so, what service was rendered?

Thanks again for your help & suggestions!

Hi,

Here go the SBI for power steering E60. The problems is known by BMW. This what I uncovered after review of the database. I will try obtain the the full SBI 32 04 07. Hence, I only found 32 07 08, 32 17 08 (replacement of powersteering fluid) and the all known BMW issues&resolution since 2009 December.

Steering and Wheel Alignment 32 07 08 March-09 E46/53/60/61/83 Squeaking Noise from the Steering Gear

Steering and Wheel Alignment 32 04 07 May-08 ALL TeileClearing ( Enhanced Technical Support) for Steering Systems

Steering and Wheel Alignment 32 17 08 Dec-08 ALL Rubbing and/or Scraping Noise from the Steering Column

I recommend first try with a flush/replacement at your local dealer before replacement of the steering rack or powersteering pump. It will save $$$$

Thanks so much for your help here! I really appreciate this!

I'm not sure if my problem can be solved using these TSB's though. The 1st one indicates a noise in the steering column. My noise sounds like it is coming from under the passenger dash and it sounds like a pump actuator - more than a rubbing/scraping noise. The 2nd STB sounds just like my problem, but it indicates that it is for E60's up to '06, except M5 and models with Active Steering or Active Roll Stabilization - and my car has both!

Man, I don't know what to do? I'm going to take these TSB's to my dealer anyone and see what they say.
If you do happen to find anything else, please do send it! Really, really appreciate it!

Ever since then problem is gone. This was 20k miles ago.

Then again, my BMW tech is amazing. The guy reads forums, knows everything about these cars. Chances are whoever checked your ride out just didn't know better.
can you find out what this new blend of fluid is?
i've flushed and added lubrizol to my steering fluid, but i still get a slight groan when turning at low speeds, which i determined to be coming from the passenger floor area. behind the passenger front wheel is the valve body for the active roll stabilization system, which runs off the power steering fluid.
dealer told me noise is normal.

I can't say my steering noise was a humming/whistling noise but whenever I turned my steering wheel left and/or right, it made some kind of crackling noise... and I took it to the dealers about 4 times and they at last found out that it was some air bag issue... they deployed the air bag and installed a new one in and the noise went away.

Don't know if it's a similar problem though to yours... hope you get it fixed!!!

I had this issue as well. They told me that they lubed "it" up and it really was gone. Though, I never asked what "it" was.

This is exactly the same as mine has been doing: Cold mornings, turn the wheel and the noise is coming from in front of the passenger side dash. Anyone have anything new in this area?
