Hi guys

I get an SOS failure message every time I start the car, was not bothering me much as I will sort it out when I get the car in for its next service, until I tried to check Traffic Information in the Sat Nav. I got a blank screen with a message (No reception!).

Are the SOS & Traffic information linked?

Your comments would be helpful, thanks everyone.

Ps I am in the UK (in case it is different here)

Entirely different systems.

SOS is part of telematics (via GSM phone network).

TMC (traffic Message Channel) is via RDS (Radio Data System) FM tuner. In UK this is done via (only) Classic FM so if you have no Classic FM reception yu won't get TMC data either.

Check your TMC settings in IDrive too.

aybeesea, You were right - I needed to change the settings in I-Drive and have traffic Information back

That leaves the S.O.S failure message, which is apparently very common on the E60

Thanks again and what a great Forum

As for the SOS you need a new TCU Unit to make it work properly.Do a search, there is tons of information on the subject. Good luck
cheers

BMW has some sort of recall campaign for the telemetrics...if you search the forum, someone has actually scanned their letter and attached it in a thread.

Matt,
SOS ins which part of TCU which is one of the nodes of MOST bus. There are a few possibilities that things went wrong:
1. TCU malfunction -> Check your BT if it works. If it does not your TCU might be malfunction and needs to be replaced
2. One of MOST node is disconnected from the ring like CD changer. If you take out CD changer, you'll have this message.

Good luck.
