It is -10 degrees up here and my 2006 E60 won't blow hot air. It blows cold to lukewarm air until it has been running for about 40 minutes and then it starts to blow warm, but not hot. The folks at Sears Imported Autos had it for a week and couldn't figure it out. They said a few others had the same problem so they sent an e-mail to the BMW engineers. Meanwhile I have to dress like an Arctic Explorer to drive my car to work. Has anyone else in a cold climate had this problem?

1. Have you looked at the Vent Settings in the Climate section of iDrive? You can manually adjust the temp of the air coming out the upper body vents.
2. Have you looked at the Intensity of the Auto Programs (also in Climate section of iDrive)? You might want to experiment with the Intense or Medium setting based on what is already set.

Put it on a southbound big road. In 1300 miles you could be in Nawh-lins, LA.

Still under warranty I assume? You have already changed the Vent settings in I-drive so that vent fan shows RED lines, NOT BLUE? If still a problem, then take it to the stealer while you are still under warranty. I don't have to worry 'bout those heater settings . But if she stops blowin cold, then I am trouble

I am in minneapolis too. my 528i does the same thing. Takes lot longer than my 95 Camry to heat up. In particular, my feet stay frozen. I can feel a drift around the steering column. Wonder if that is well-insulated. will have to check with the dealer.

I'm also in the Minneapolis area and this happened to my 2004 530i last winter. The cause of the problem was the engine thermostat. The climate control system will not turn on fully if the engine doesn't get up to the prescribed temperature. I assume Sears checked that out, but it could be that it's sluggish and taking awhile to close.
I'm finding that I also have a few gremlins at sub-zero temperatures. When it's really cold (<-10), I have a traction control sensor that errors out intermittently and this morning I noticed that I had hot air, but the fan wouldn't turn on fully unless the defrost was on. One my 30 min. commute, the cabin was still pretty cold.
Good luck...
