...you know that sinking feeling? Like when you just rolled past a State Trooper at 85 in a 65? Or when you walk out to your car, think a tire is a little low, and instantly think "cracked rim...uggggghhhh
"?
I always check my tires before and after road trips and I keep a miniature air compressor in the trunk just in case. I went for a decently-long drive over the weekend. When I checked at home Sunday morning my left rear tire was low by 4-5 psi. Such a slow leak made me immediately think "cracked rim." I had one of my 124s crack on I-85 coming North out of Atlanta and replaced it (right front). I had another one (the same one after the stealer replaced it) crack after getting blindsided by so-called "road improvements" in Charlotte (can you justifiably call something a road improvement if when you're done the man-hole cover is 4-6 inches below the surface of the road?). I actually shopped around and found someone to repair that rim. At 25% of the price, I figured, it's worth a shot.
Anyway, I got the car in to the shop today. No cracked rim! Just a nail! Whew!
Still, and I know it has been addressed a few times, these 124s crack WAY too often. That and the super-soft windshield are my two pet peeves about the e60. I feel like I'm looking through a dirty windshield all the time, and driving in the city is reminiscent of tiptoeing through the house as a teenager trying not to wake my parents.

I've replaced one and repaired one and I honestly do not know what caused it since I do not drive on bad roads. I think it is simply bad design. One more crack and I am probably going to replace all of them with aftermarket rims.
