I've been looking at getting the headrests with the screens inbuilt but I notice that most sites in the US only list the following options for the headrests

1. Comfort Seats.
2. Motorised headrests
3. Active restraint

I have none of those. So am I right in assuming that all headrests in the 5 series are controlled via a motor? i.e. you don't have the catch below the headrests to adjust the height?

No, my 2004 545 did not have motorized head rests. The motorized headrests came with the comfort seats but on the standard seats, you got the manually adjusted head rests...

Thats what I thought too but then why can't I find replacement headrests for the pre-LCI cars which are non Comfort, non motorised?

Good question! I was just looking at the RealOEM website and could only find the Comfort Seat head rest despite looking for parts for a January 2004 build car. They show the basic seat but no head rest. Maybe they use the same head rest but the Comfort Seat has the internal motor for the power adjusting...

Bruce, maybe it's linked to that BMW needed to redesign the headrests last year after a complete failure in a whip lash crash test?

The problem is that the headrests that have the motor (comfort or standard) have smooth headrest posts. Whereas the ones without the motor have the notches that the headrests click into for the various predefined heights. My fear is that if I buy a headrest replacement that was built for a motorised system then it would not have anything to catch on to and just slip down.

So people in the US do have headrests that are neither of the three options below
1. Comfort Seats.
2. Motorised headrests
3. Active restraint

Another question. Does comfort headrests ALWAYS come with the motor headrests. Or can I find comfort headrests which are manually height adjustable.

I wonder if the rear seat head rests would fit the front? The RealOEM website shows the manually adjusted rear seat head rests. For the 2004 cars, there were three different seat options as I recall, standard, sport and comfort. I know comfort had the power adjusting head rests, sport must have also. My cheap seat did not have the power...
