Can other 2008 owner's pitch in and let me know if this is what you found as well? I know that Ford stopped using the charcoal air filters (intake tract for evaporative emissions control) back in 2006...did BMW finally get the memo

thx!!

That's right. I got in there also planning on pulling out the charcoal filter and didn't find one. I think from the posts that our orange filter is thicker than the prior years which may meet whatever requirements they needed in the airbox the charcoal.

Getting your hands dirty all ready, huh. Break that sucker in yet? Remember, low and slow for 1200 miles.

. . . and so the car will remain that way for the rest of its life. I don't really buy that break-in style especially with so many "learning" features on these cars.

You know there are two very different schools of thought on proper break in procedures...some say take it easy and others say drive it hard (not stupidly so - but hard enough that the rings seat properly)..I've tried both in the past and haven't ever had major engine issues (oil consumption, failure, etc.) I suspect engines are built pretty soild these days and as long as you don't abuse them - they will be OK. I have been trying to not rev the engine as high as it will go, and have been trying to vary the pace and not cruise at so much of a steady speed. I have also run it up a bit (not max revs) so as to not be "pampering" it too much either...just trying to vary the driving conditions.

Hey SLO town...good to hear from you! Thanks, I had not heard that about the air filters....eventually, I'll probably go with a free'r flowing filter like the K&N or similar. I'm trying to take it easy - but not too easy - I want to vary the driving conditions during break in as much as possible.
