Just picked up my 528xi yesterday. Black saphire met, nat brown int, sport pkg etc.. Initial impreesion: much better accceleration than my 2005 530i. Natural Brown interior even better looking than I expected, especially with anthracite head liner. In fact there were many customers fawning over the car. Wasn't the rearview mirror supposed to have compass?

No, It is an option for BMW when it is standard in some other less expensive cars.

Congrats on your new car! I have had my 528Xi for 3 weeks tomorrow. I also have the Natural Brown interior, however my headliner is light grey and I really don't like it. Smart move on the black head liner. Wished I joined this e60 Forum BEFORE I ordered my car.

I too was surprised that there was no compass in the mirror, or for that matter no water temp or oil pressure too!!!. Looks like they want you to go to BMW accessories to upgrade the mirror:

They have three optional rear view mirrors. Anyone know how hard they are to install or is it best to take it to BMW Service?

I installed a BMW aftermarket mirror in the X3. It added homelink plus the compass. Installation wasn't too difficult. The calibration of the compass did take a few tries (of driving in circles).

I would have thought the compass mirror was in the premium package. Did you get that?

Congrats on your 528xi. For a compass alternative, you can display "current postion" in the assistance window. That screen will show an arrow that always points North. After a few hours of driving, you might forget you don't have the nice mirror compass. Good luck. I think it's a wonderful car. --Ray

I seem to recall the director of customer service at my dealership telling me about several customers who broke their windscreens trying to remove the rearview mirror.
