As the topic says "new to this whole thing" Ordered our 545i Aug. 26th expect delivery in November.Options ordered are: Rear Side Airbags, Front Comfort Seats, Fold Down Rear Seats, Navigation System, Heads up Display, Satellite Radio, cold Weather Pkg, Premium Sound Pkg and Active Steering. I have read a lot of your posts which have answered many questions but I still have more. Some background information. My wife and I are Americans working for the US Govt. so we recieve many wonderful benefits others over here do not. I can only imagine paying all of the regular taxes and other living purchases. Questions follow:
1. Since I ordered Satellite Radio and I am in Germany is there a free 1 year subscription with that if so, what service? When we return to the States do we then get the Sirius (sp) service?
2. We purchased the car through the American Sales service why do we get only the 2 year German Warranty not the 4 year US?
3. Should we get winter tires. In older versions of the 5 series I kept hearing folks talk about the light rear end and how they carried around sand bags to maintain traction.
4 How soon should the dealer give the VIN # so I can check things out on the BMW web site?
I think that is enough to chew on for now. No doubt I will be asking many more questions in the coming weeks. Thanks in advance!!!

I too have recently ordered my Jet Black/beige 525ia (steptronic) w/ premium, cold and premium sound. Expect to be able to pick it up in November. (I'm in NJ). Can't wait...quite impatient. I keep checking the owners circle but still says "on order". Helps to keep reading posts from all of you in the mean time.

This is a bit exagerated. I am in the netherlands and we don't get much snow over here (maybe 3 or 4 days of the year). Even in our conditions wintertires are a big plus. When the temperature goes belowe 7 degrees celsius you have a big advantage with wintertires. Traction is much better and in an extreme situation (near accident, heavy braking etc.) you have a big advantage when you have wintertires under your car.

There are a few threads about wintertires were we talked about the advantages of them and wich ones are preffered by the owners. If you do a search on wintertire you'll find loads of info!

Thank you Iceman. I feel officially welcomed now. (No disrespect intended to those that have welcomed me already.) October 9th I will be flying back to the US for some meetings. (Naturally I would have to miss this and the day before my birthday too. What kind of winter tires do you suggest for a nonsport pkg. 545i? ( I know why buy a BMW without the Sport Pkg! All part of negotiations with the love of my mortal life/)

I've got the dunlop wintersports M3 with dsst on 17 inch wheels. Haven't got any experience with them so cannot review them. Dunlop and bridgestone are the standard bmw tires so that's the reason why I chose the dunlops (bridgestone doesn't have wintertires with dsst as far as I know).
