It just occured to me that my spare wheel is 2 inches smaller, not staggered ,not low profile but rather the stock 17 OEM.Is it worthwhile picking up a 19 spare or am I needlessly worrying? Would there be problems temporarily driving with one wheel that different? Thanks for your thoughts!

This is not a problem becuase assuming you bought the correct 19" tire size your 17" spare should have similar rolling diameter.

I think there was a thread on the issue of flat tire and one of the member brought up something about a flat kit by either BMW or Tirerack which some M5 owners have just in case. Search fir it in the M5 forum.

The wheel size isn't the problem. It is the overall diameter of the tire.
Find a tire size calculator online and enter the wheel and tire specs of the tires that are on the car. Enter the 17" wheel and tire specs and compare the diameters and % difference. About 1-2% should be OK on a spare I would think.
At least this is what I am doing. I just installed new 19" wheels on Pilot Super sports and will be checking the diameter of my spare to see what I need to do.

Its all about the rolling diameter... which is 25.5 inches
19" rims will have less rubber
17" rims will have MORE rubber.....
A lot of people thing by getting a larger rim diameter, they are getting a "larger" overall tire, but thats not the case...
