For the last one to two months I've noticed a very loud rattle on first
start up in the am. It is getting more noticeable and I'm scheduled for
a visit to the dealer on 12/29. The rattle settles down after about 10
minutes and also is less if the car is warmed up in neutral. Has anyone
else had this happen? Mine is a MY 2004 545i sport w/ 17000 mi.

I had the same problem with the AC compressor. It takes about 4 hours to replace AC compressor. The technician kept the car over night to diagnose the problem, since it happens only when the car is cold.

is not specific enough. What kind ? Metallic ? depending on RPM ? depending on acceleration ?
I sometimes imagine to notice the valves of my V8 when the engine is cold AND the weather is cold and rainy.
But I also noticed this with my BMWs before (6 and 8 cylinders) The worst sound had had my 325e (6 cylinders) - nevertheless I sold this car after 300.000 km without any engine failure ....
Therefore, I hate it, but I don't bother any more.

Yeah, I just noticed lately with cold weather and with a quiet cockpit, that I can hear the valves on my V8 as well, similar to a diesel engine's valves when the engine is cold. Much more subdued on the V8 of course, but noticeble. It occurs on my car between 1000-2200rpm when pulling away through 1st 2nd 3rd gears. When the engine warms up it seems to go away.
Is this a V8 thing or Valvetronic, never had it before on my 6 cyl E46 ??....
Strange...considering I have done a sweet and nice breakin on the engine....
Anyway it's not a rattle on mine...
Andy.

Every single V8 I've ever had has rattled on start-up. Varied depending on the car how long this lasts though.
Nothing like revving it gently when it's cold and feeling the whole car shake slightly as the power shakes on its mountings!

The noise I have is a "ticking" that starts up after the car is warmed up. I was advised that this is the electronic thermostat working and is "normal" even though I've never heard another 530 that sounds like mine.

Any thoughts what might be causing the noise?

Update- dealer called and at first thought it was theVPC[a valvetronic control
module],but further testing now shows it is the DME[main onboard CPU]
that has to be removed plus reprogrammed ! I don't know how long this will
take but will keep you posted. It has to be sent from Johnstown,Pa.
