Trip computer serves another great information purpose I just discovered on my car.
I have about 4300 miles on my '05 and never had need to use or RESET my trip computer. I called it up the other day with voice command and got some usefull info.By not resetting it, you get a read-out of the TOTAL HOURS the car has been driven which I find really interesting. Normally you would use that for the length of a trip and than reset it. If you have NAV you get all the info you need without using it. Thus you can now keep a running total of hours the car has been used, as well as the average gas milage for the life of the car and the average speed driven as you go along if you have never reset the computer. Of course you can get the miles per gallon and speed on your check button, but I keep going back to Zero at various times, so I can't get a cumulative amount now.
I see I now have 112 HOURS on the car, an average of 20 miles to a gallon and avg speed of 42 mph for the 4300 miles it has been driven. I don't know how many digets this will continue to show this info. on the trip computer, but so far, so good.
If anyone with more milage, that has never reset the trip computer could check this,I would be interested in how many digets it now shows..
Not earth shaking, but an interesting aside. Keep finding new stuff on this 5, intersting car and TOY. If you are just taking delivery of a new 5, you might want to make use of this and not reset the computer.

I don't have more miles, but I'll have to check it out. What in addition do you get with Nav? I have reset the computer, but maybe from now, I'll leave it alone. I'd like to know how many hours I've driven to reach a certain milestone...say 10k miles.

Sure the timer will tick on until you reset it but BMW is still quite behind in giving us additional functions with this sort of thing. For starters, they should at least follow the lead of M-B and give us multiple timers, one that is like what we have, one that resets every time you start the car, and one that you can keep running even if the car is off...

Rudy, your right, even my cell phone has nearterm and longterm timers. to bad the only way around this on the 5 is with the trip computer. Should be more choices . Should not have to isolate the trip timer for this purpose, but that is the only choice I can see.

Isn't that the Journey Computer ??

It's great, because it shows, at what time the journey started, the total driving time, avg speed, avg fuel com....

I use it on all our long distance driving... Tomorrow I'm on the road again, Denmark and Germany - which means autobahn for the first time in our E60

They should also use iDrive to give us a detailed gauge screen, with digital readings and bar graphs on temperature and oil pressure, rpms, electrical. The car knows all that stuff, why not display it. My dad's 1988 Olds Toronado could do that.
