Dave on his way to work...
I guess that my 11.5 K on my rear OEM Contis was a long life.

I'd like weigh in on this a bit. I've driven a good bit on both the Michelin PS2's and the General UHP's. For fact comparison purposes the two models were on two cars. The Michelin's were on my E39 M5 and I went through two sets. The Generals are on my 550i M-Sport. IMO, the two cars handle similarly (yes the M5 was faster and even more sporty but for daily driving in most situations, I feel the two cars are close enough to evaluate the two tires).
For what its worth, my opinion is that the PS2's are head and shoulders above the Generals and here is why. Tires have many characteristics which include but are not limited to its lateral grip, tread wear (life), noise level, road feel, etc. In addition what is often left out of tire discussions is how these characteristics change throughout the life-cycle of the tire. If you only drive the first 1/2 life of the tires this makes littler difference but I think most of us buy tires and try to get the most out of them that we can.
The Michelin PS2's handle better, are quieter, and they are smoother. I haven't yet used an entire set of Generals so I can't really say how they will compare toward the end of life but I do know that the Michelin's are as good on the last day as they were on the first.
So what is the right compromise? For me its about having the most pleasant ride quality (low noise and fewer vibrations) with very good handling (but not necessarily "track level") because I like to make my daily use fun and yet still enjoy long trips. For this reason, when the Generals are done, I'll probably look hard at the PS2 A/S - they will handle plenty good for me and I'll save a few bucks from the standard PS2.
If you want to save money, that's fine, you have many options, and yes, from most of the feedback it seems that the General's will in fact last longer. But its all cost vs performance. And performance covers not only handling and treadwear, it describes all of the characteristics of a tire throughout its life cycle.
