I have a 335i sedan, but this is my 1st BMW so I can't compare with previous transmissions but I have to say this transmission is very smooth too smooth that I sometimes forget how fast I'm going. Only times i get a jerk in the car is when I switch the to steptronic and almost slamming my foot on gas pedal(this is the intended purpose anyway). lol

I test drove a 335i a few weeks ago, I must say I was quite impressed with the new tranny. Gear shifts happen instantly and when you downshift, it matches your revs,,, sweet.

I don't have the lurch but I really, really dislike the way the transmission seems to love changing gears all the time backwards and forwards. The slightest whiff of more pressure on the gas pedal and it immediately changes down, the lightest backing off and it changes up. I must have the most athletic tranny in the world cos its working its a** off...

The transmission in the new 335i is the all new 6L50 Manufactured & Designed by GM Strasbourg France.
This transmission is totally specific to BMW but is based on the same 6L80 as used in the Z06 Corvette & similar.

I have been fortunate enough to have ridden in a development E90 3.0 (petrol) with this transmission & there is a huge difference between this new 6L50 & the ZF product and even compared the very similar GM 6L65/70/80 used in the US.

The transmission is tuned for ultra quick shifts and is able to deliver this due to the new clutch to clutch mechanical configuration - do not be confused - this is not a DSG - it is still a conventional Auto box with Torque Converter.

Apparently - the GM US product will not have decreased snappy shift times as there is no public desire - based on customer feedback profiles

Anyway - here's some product blurb - PS soon to be released 6L45 will be fitted to 2.0 & 2.5 Petrol & 2.0 Diesel motors.

The 6L50 (and similar 6L45) is a 6-speed longitudinally-mounted automatic transmission produced by General Motors. It is very similar in design to the larger 6L80/6L90, and will be produced at the GM Powertrain plant in Strasbourg, France.
The 6L50 is adaptable to rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive applications. It can accommodate engines with up to 332 ft?lbf (450 N?m) of torque, and vehicles with a GVWR of 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg).

Gear ratios:

1 2 3 4 5 6 R
4.06 2.37 1.55 1.16 0.85 0.67 3.20

Applications:

2007- Cadillac SRX
2007- Cadillac STS
2007 BMW X3 3.0
2007 BMW X5 3.0
2007 BMW 335
2007 BMW 330
2007 BMW 328

Other BMW Petrol & Diesel Models to follow.

I am confused. Is the SAT built using the same core hardware as the non-SAT? Is the difference just the paddle shifters and enhanced software and controls on the SAT. Thanks.

No, it's more complex than that as the Wandler-part ("clutch") is completely rebuilt...

I think this is wrong. Based on an article in wardauto.com, see ZF DCT Fighter, the new tranny is a ZF 2nd gen 6 speed. The article doesn't specifically mention the E60 SAT with paddles but mentions the 335i with paddles uses the ZF tranny as well as the new X5. Also note Wikipedia does NOT mention the 335i and shows the GM tranny has a torque limit of 332 ft.lbs.

335i, 335xi and 535i get the ZF Six Speed Automatic Transmission GA6HP19Z, GA6HP19ZTU (3 series) or GA6HP26Z or GA6HP26ZTU (5 series). GM trannies are not offered on 5 series.

The smaller engined 3 series can have either the ZF or the GM6 - 6L46R Transmission.

That net of this is the conclusion that the ZF would be the SAT tranny in the 5 series and the 335s. I suppose the GM tranny MIGHT also be a SAP in the lesser 3s, although the ZF is also available to them.
