Whispers have it that despite BMW's assertion that there was nothing wrong with the steptronic on the 5er, denying that transmission slam even exists for instance.
Privately they were furious with the quality of the ZF transmission and left ZF in no doubt that unless they came up quickly with an improved product they were liable to get the chop when the F10 is produced.
ZF have obviously responded.
BMW cannot reveal this or they would be admitting a production failing and get bombarded with lawsuits from those of us who are very unhappy with our steptronics.

Hmmm, one minute the 'box is a dream and then every so often is does something a little strange... It will sometimes 'thunk' down or occasionally I get the rev-wobble problem...
One mans dream is another mans nightmare.

How did it compare? Was it smooth as silk or did it shift so fast that it "thunked" into gear?

The rev wobble is a great way to describe it

I wrote the site : http://www.thelurch.com in response to the complete runaround from Jaguar ..
I have just last week finalised a deal to trade-in my lurching Jag and get a new 335D E92.
I test drove the 335i with the new ZF automatic and it was a revelation. In normal D mode it was fine, but the DS mode was quite frankly startling. It really did downchange and hang onto the gears just as you would expect as if you were driving a manual in a "very spirited manner".
In the Jag when you switch to "S" mode about the most dramatic thing that happens is a little red light illuminates next to the gearstick. Whoopee-do.
So .... It's good-bye to Jaguar (for good). Treat customers like idiots and do NOTHING to help when YOU KNOW ALL TOO WELL ABOUT THE PROBLEM - your loss.
And the slightest hint of a lurch or bang with the newest 'box ... I'll drive across the border to ZF and insert it.
