I whole-heartly agree that it was just an afterthought. IMHO, it looks horrible. Start/stop button is worst than conventional key. Comfort access should be standard on E60. BMW, look at Lexus GS430.

this makes no sense.... they have a start/stop button, but you STILL have to put the key in?? what is the point?? how this kind of debacle makes it into production instead of MP3 playback or RDS with NAV is something to think about....

I believe that the key has to be inserted on cars that are not equipped with "comfort access" - the system in which allows you to start the car with the key in your pocket. However, I understand that it may seem a bit weird to have to insert the key only to push a button on the cars w/o comfort access. But still... IMHO.. kinda cool.

[/quote]They simply didn't want to manufacture two different systems for comfort and non-comfort access. Also you do need to insert the key fob periodically to charge it.

Kind of strange they are adding it on non comfort access cars.......don't really see the point.
Had Keyless Go on the now gone E500, only came with the start/stop button if you ordered Keyless Go.
That aside, I thought the feature was stupid and worked about 70% of the time. If you have to keep the key on your person to begin with what's the point? How hard is it to lock and unlock the doors with the remote? Its not like I walk around with a bunch of keys in my pocket. That and I hardly ever used the start/stop button.
So, I passed on the Comfort access option.....now at least I'll use the start/stop button (no choice in the matter).
I don't really see the point of the feature though, should have kept it as part of Comfort access.

I always had a way of lovin to spin the key and start the engine "like a proper man"! Anyway the single good thing is that the key card would look better than the metal non retractable one! Maybe....

So no thanx, even if i had to pay 200$ extra for this feature i still wouldn't get it! Now an M rear wing that would be money well spent...

Yes, it looks pretty tacky to have the fob stuck into the steering column. It probably was believed that the E60 would not get the push button system until the facelift for MY2008, at which time the dashboard would be properly modified. Apparently with all the competition offering it as standard or options so quickly BMW had to rush it into the E60, and did not want to spend the money to re-jig the dash at this time. Shame.
Also, when you get comfort access, I assume the key (in you pocket, or jacket, etc) is corresponding with the car to update its electronic files on the car status, configuration, etc and charging its batteries. So it must be receiving/transmitting radio waves from wherever it is in the vehicle - and not "radiation free" as someone asserted earlier.
I wish that folks who don't want comfort access (and save ? $1000) could have kept the regular key system.

Sorry guys, is there anyone over here (E60Speed?) who has any clue on the possibility of retrofitting the Comfort Access Option on a September Production Car (with Start/Stop button) ordered without that option?
I mean, could it just be a computer module or it will not be retroffitable?
Thanks
Luke
