I could not get my car into neutral, so it would not start and could not be towed in gear. Its been a few weeks since they replaced the tranny. So far so good.

I had my tranny replaced as well, to fix the"slam" problem. When I get in the car to start it, I still often need to switch back and forth between 1st and N for the car to recognize that it is in neutral. Never refused to get into neutral, but still a little annoying.

I'm having the same problem with mine, if I turn it off in gear. When trying to start it, it won't go into neutral. But if I turn it off in neutral, there doesn't seem to be a problem...
Is there anything specific I should tell the dealer? Any magic words other than "fix my car!"
Pennetta - With yours, did they have to replace the whole transmission or just the control modules? Glad to hear yours is working well now.

1st time in- tried to recreate problem, did not happen while they had it.
2nd time in- replaced brake light switch.
3rd time in- updated SMG software, replace SMG control module.
4th time in- replaced the whole transmission, including hydraulic controls.

Magic Words- "I have been very patient and calm even though I was stranded four times and had to abandon my car because BMW Assist would not tow it while stuck in gear; Don't make me come back here again because of this". (Said very calmly but strongly.)

Just dropped mine off at the dealer, the service guy said the SMGs were having a lot of software issues... He said a software update (if that is what the car needs) takes two days. (It only took one day when I lived in Germany...) Until then, I get to drive the big-ass Dodge Ram pickup they gave me as a loaner. Yee ha!

Maybe a silly question:

Are you pressing the brakes always when changing from 1st to N. I found out that if you go from 1st to N and then pressing the brakes afterwards it stays in 1st, although the stick is in the N position.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, just trying to help.

Interesting... I dont notice how I change gears... I think I always used the brakes... I "think" I treat it like a clutch. While at a stop of course... HOPEFULLY not during 5th to 6th gear changes... then the guy behind me wouldnt be too happy.

The only time this happens to me is if I try to shift too quickly after starting the car. It takes a few extra seconds for the software to catch-up with everything. Is that what you guys are talking about?
