I actually just took a BMW tire training course. I have no opinion as to the validity but BMW says that each model's suspension is specifically tuned to a particular tire and there should be no substitutions of brand or model. I really have very little personal experience with this because I always seem to blow out the tires under my wheel/tire warranty and they are always replaced with the same ones. I also run BMW style 135 rims with Dunlop Winter M3 tires and I expect them to feel and handle differently (worse). Never actually wore out a set of summer tires. The last time I did was on my M3 and I replaced the Pilot Sports with Bridgestone Pole Position something or another and LOVED them.
