i really appreciate the input. i promise i never went near that side of the engine except to remove the airduct on that side. i saw a post on the e90 forums regarding this, and someone needed to have their ecm reflashed after he did his plugs (dont know if this is what the service manager was referring to)

i also never turned the car on until everything was back together.

interestingly, the ses light came on about 700miles after i finished the work. it came on after i decided to use a bottle of techron, so maybe the ses light is due to debris? the abnormal rpm behavior happened right after the work was done though, so maybe they arent related?

its possible they're unrelated. have you cleared the fault and tried driving it? also just give that idle control valve a tap with the engine running. not too hard but moderate.

the light has been on for a day (since adding the techron), and now it's gone. i'm really starting to think it was debris. as for the rpm acting up, i'll tap the idle control valve and check out anything else you guys recommend. thanks again

do the 6 cylinder engines have idle control valves?
my mechanic told me the v8 engines use the valvetronic to adjust the idle. i never noticed a idle control valve on the intake either.

that's a good point. i cannot seem to find it in any diagrams (N52 engine), but there definitely is a valvetronic motor.

Just changed my plugs with OEM NGKs, also did the valve cover gasket. As soon as I started it up, the RPMS go up to about 1100, then drop down pretty low to 300, then act normal. this never happened prior to changing the plugs and gasket.

now i have a SES shooting out p0174 and p0171 for system bank too lean. does my ECM need to be reflashed in order to adjust to the new spark plugs? perhaps i over-tightened the plugs themselves? any ideas??
Possible vacuum leak as others have mentioned. On my E38 I had the same codes and eventually had to replace the MAF, despite a few cleanings. Have you looked at the mass air meter to see if it is connected correctly, or if the connection might be loose?
