Hey guys, new owner here of a '05 530i with 57K on the clock. Was a one owner, and taken great care of. I'm reading like crazy but going through a steep learning curve on maintenance. My SA tells me service on the tranny is about 100K miles, but I'd really like to do it sooner. My indy shop said the filter was a part of the pan and would run about 400 bucks and the entire job would be about 600. I've always done my own service from oil changes to trans fluid/filter changes etc, but am totally new to BMW's. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
PS - Looks like a great forum with some sharp members! I tried to search as much as possible, but couldnt find the info I was looking for.

Don't do it yourself. Take it to a dealer. This way if something happens within 3000 miles or 3 months from the time they service it, they are responsible. My dealer even told me this (depends on the dealership obviously). You're correct to do the trans fluid flush at about 65 or 70k miles. My dealer charged 400-450 for the service so if your indy shop is charging you that much, you're seriously at the wrong indy shop... The stealership is usually THE MOST expensive place to go.
Welcome to the forum and prepare to spend a lot of money on mods. Its inevitable.

Thanks for the welcome! I'm not really sure on the indy, I've yet to use them, but they've been there forever and are generally highly recommended. The price was over the phone and the kid may have looked up the wrong part like for an M5 or something. 450 sounds much better and I'd gladly pay that for the tranny service and peace of mind knowing it was serviced right.
As for the mods, who knows, the car is my wife's she picked up last week. Personally I drive a Z71 and the new addition scares the heck out of me looking at the cost of major repairs easily going into the 7K and up range. That's why I'm here trying to learn as much as possible. I'm sure I'll get more comfortable with owning an out-of-warranty BMW as time goes by.

Just got off the phone with the SA. He told me $320 for tranny service, $110 to reset the computer. Is the tranny service monitored in iDrive? Can't I reset the iDrive service items myself?
