1) you may want to check your insurance papers. here you'll have a lot of explaining to do if you don't hand over two keys plus emergency key (if any)
2) not unless you weaken the springs/rods and that may be a problem when you do want it to stay open.
use the force.... closing it by touching the inside only. Works after some practice.

There is a spring adjustment but depending on how it's set right now, you might only be able to make it harder since springs tend to lose force over time...

Take a look at the following video and see if you can catch how they close the trunk...

hey, I don't have the handle on the inside (the light coloured thing in the middle).
and the key is the same as the E39, is this a movie from the beginning of the E60 range?

The handle you speak of isn't for closing the trunk, that's the emergency release handle that would open the trunk if you were locked inside it.
The two closing handles are on either side of where the emergency release is/would be (you can see them in the video if you look closely.) They're simply indentations in the liner so don't go looking for anything fancy...

My E34 had the same inside "closing indention" and it worked great...but it didn't have the heavy spring load on it like this car has. I have indeed been working on the "pull it down hard and fast and get your hand out of the way before it gets chopped off" technique, and it seems to be the way to go. I was just wondering if there was any adjustment. Anyway, thanks again for the repsonses.
