Default new member-several issues with my new car

Hey everyone, thank you for making this forum and supporting each other....its very helpful to learn what someone already went through so we can help eachother get ahead...i recently bought a 2008 528i inline 6 rear wheel drive...ive always loved bmw more than any brand...i love the 2014 and up 4 series but the 2008 528i caught my eye and i got a good deal..its perfect shape...and runs great, has 180k mile and a few issues...i cant just shift into gear...i have to manually put into neutral turn the car off and then on and then it will go into any gear after that until i turn the car off , then i have to repeat, also the idrive controller doesnt do anything ...the screen is not responding...i installed a replacement from a junk yard but its the same...i ordered a new control knob from ebay thats in perfect working condition so i will try that and go from there....does anyone know why else the idrive screen will not respond...i read theres no fuse for the knob...also getting the trans into drive from the initial start isnt usually possible without putting it in neutral first...i can click into to drive all i want but the light stays in "P"...if anyone can help with these issues it would great assist me

1. wont shift into drive or reverse without going manually into neutral first
2. idrive does not respond with 2 different controller knobs

Welcome to the group.

Seems like you bought a car from an owner that didn't know what they were doing. I would first install INPA to see what codes are being thrown for the transmission. Work might of been done and not completed correctly.

When changing the selector did you notice anything out of the ordinary with the wires? Have you pulled the CCC/CIC out and looked at the harness to see if anything is disconnected or damaged wires? I would start there with that. I'm sure it's not the selector if you changed it out with a used one already.

these are the codes: torque converter clutch p2761 and coolant thermostat p0128 ..i had it checked a few days ago with the obd II and for the selector the harness is in perfect shape and plugs in as normal...im wondering if theres anthinkg else in between the selector and screen that could hinder the control...i didnt notice any wires out of place or damaged but the radio has been acting weird and the air fan came on last night when ignition was on but not started...i previously turned it off

The screen is just a screen. You will have to pull out the CCC/CIC which sits behind the HVAC controls.

If you are having convertor issues then you may be looking at having to replace the transmission. I'm still thinking service wasn't done correctly but you will only be able to tell if you lift the car and take the pan off to look at what's going on. Gear selector lever, valve body or mechatronic connector could be the issue. Also you may want to look at the gear selector it self. You need a BMW code reader. What you have is not going to help you at all. Google INPA and find out what you need to get it working it's free and all you need is a laptop and cable. You're not going to get much help with generic codes.

I don't think it is an iDrive issue I think the issue is wiring or coding. You can't just swap modules in a BMW. Everything has to be coded to the vehicle and programmed.

You're jumping the gun. Don't spend money on things you might not need. Get INPA first, troubleshoot then purchase. You will spend your last dime guessing with these cars.
