This is something that has been touched upon in a few different threads but not in any great detail.

What I want to know is the following:

1. Is the new 525d engine exactly the same as the 530d engine, i.e. does it have the same basic block, pistons, crank, valve train etc.?
2. Also, what other hardware is different i.e. does if have a different Turbo, Exhaust etc.?
3. Finally, I presume that the ECU mapping is also different to take account of the additional performance?

I guess where this is leading is will it be possible to take 525d engine to similar power levels (or beyond) to that of the 530d with a simple re-map without the need for any major work doing?

Would be really interested to hear peoples views on this as I am interested to know for the future prospect of such a re-map!

As far as I know it's the same base block, but with smaller turbo and detuned electronics. I asked yesterday both AC Schnitzer and Hartge for possibilities of a remap. Other tuners go as far as 231hp/500nm for about ? 700,-. No message yet from them.

While I want to play it safe with guarantees etc., I might go with one of the two above and the eventual higher price for granted.

I will keep you in touch.

I really hope it's more than software, else I'll feel like a fool...

I hope it is not more than the software. In that case the 525d should be tuned till a standard 535d 272hp (btw which I can't imagine).

Normally a engine will be tuned till the next bigger engine
520d > 197 hp (525d)
525d > 231 hp (530d)
530d > 272 hp (535d)
535d > approx. 340 hp

hp numbers depend on different tuners.

535d has two turbos.

Yes, but the point was that as a general rule you can tune a model to the next model up, i.e. 525d to 530d power and 530d to 535d power.

Therefore, if the 525d is the 'same' as a 530d to start with (I don't believe it actually is!) then in theory you could tune a 525d to 535d levels! (Ignoring the benefit of twin-turbo's)
