It seems as though late 2008 registered cars had the new iDrive buttons but is still using the old iDrive software. Does anyone know why this is the case? On the car that has the new iDrive control, is it possible to upgrade to the new iDrive software?

I had a quick play with one such car and some of the buttons didn't seem to work with the old iDrive software. For example, clicking the Menu button did nothing.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

I don't know the reasons why, but to answer your question about being able to upgrade to the newer software, probably not.

I've just bought my e60 (registered late 2008) i don't think it has any new buttons. What does the new button(s) look like?

Yes, these are the new iDrive buttons I was referring to. Unfortunately, it seems as though at some point, cars were being built with these new buttons but are still using the old iDrive software. The buttons didn't seem to work very well i.e. pressing the Menu button didn't do anything. Not sure if it was that the buttons aren't mapped across to functions or if it was a problem with the car that I saw.

All 2010 cars, ( March build ) will have the new idrive software which is HD.
Do a search on some members here who took delivery of their 2010 which will have pictures of the new 3D navigation and interface.

HD? Does this mean the iDrive screen has a higher resolution? If that is the case then I can definitely see that a software upgrade path is very unlikely.

In this case the HD stands for hard disk/drive.

My 2009 550 has the new iDrive buttons but the old iDrive operating system (DVD-based nav not Hard Drive).

My buttons work just fine. But I sure would have loved the speed of the new HD-bases system. Mine is definitely slow in calculating routes, responding to the controller, etc.

Shouldn't really be slow. Most of the activity in calculating routes and responding to the controller is accessing memory, not accessing the HD or DVD.

I have the same Gen3 iDrive and do not see any noticeable lag time although there is no question that the CIC-based iDrive is faster overall.
