I agree, it wouldn't be good for either the torque convertor or otherwise the brakes (or even a slipping clutch in your auto).
Just put it in DS, release the brakes and then floor it. If the traction control is holding you back (you'll notice when it's doing that): disable the DTC.

DS is sort of a sport mode and is activated when you push the gear stick left from position "D". DS letters will appear on the instrumental panel.
But in my personal experience DS didn't help me in accelerating from 0 to 100 (sprint) since you keep pedal to the metal all the way to 100. On the other hand it doesn't let RPM fall down when you un-hold acceleration pedal during fast movement and is useful in out-manouvering other cars or obstacles without losing speed/momentum.

DTC disabled is not so much dangerous on the dry surface I think, but a bit fearsome on slippery surfaces so it can throw your car's back either left or right.
