I've just had my software updated to 38.1 according to the dealer.

Car was in for some intermittent "glitches" to be looked at before the warranty expires in December this year. (i-drive failing to boot up occasionally, plus some false alarms for Brake system and seatbelts).

When I had it back, I noticed there were some differences in the way the i-drive looked and acted.

For example, the right hand side of the i-drive screen used to say "Bord" but now displays "OBC". When the i-drive control knob is pressed and you select from the first list, it now goes to the last menu that was used within that category as opposed to just starting at the beginning and letting you navigate your way down to the menu you want.

Also, there seems to be some new features which I didn't have before.

The ones I've spotted so far are:

1. The Service information display now contains 2 new entries for "Statutory Vehicle Inspection" date and "Statutory Exhaust inspection" date which equates to the MOT test date for us in the UK. (You can enter the date yourself to remind you when the next MOT is due).

2. The Clock menu now contains a check box for an "hour memo" chime. (Which I've decided not to select).

3. The Lights menu now contains a check box for "daytime running lights".

I was intrigued how the latter feature works and after some "playing around" I found that by checking this box when the headlamps are in "auto" mode, the dipped beam lights come on and stay on regardless of the level of daylight. I guess this means that the "auto headlamp" mode then becomes the DRL mode as they will always come on and stay on when the engine is running come rain or shine.

4. Although I don't have any phone installed the Communication screen now has a sub menu for Contact information whereas it used to just say "no communication device installed" (or something to that effect).

And now for the bonus feature:

The software update together with various control module reprogramming (according to the dealer) has resulted in my basic air conditioning now controlling the fan speed when the auto button is selected. Prior to going in to the dealer yesterday, the air con "auto" button did absolutely nothing to the fan speed regardless of temperature inside the cabin. Now it works like it really ought to (and like I used to get on my e39) so that when the temperature knob is turned the fan speed increases or decreases depending on how hard it needs to work to bring the car up or down to the selected temperature.

I am one happy camper today and feel like I've just picked up a new car again!

Thanks to Rydale BMW Cardiff (South Wales - UK) for fixing it for me.

Not sure what the latest version is but 38.1 is what the SA told me when I asked what version of software they had installed. Whether that was for the whole thing or just the Heater Control Module which is what prompted me to ask the question is not clear. (I assumed he was talking about the main software update)

happy for you indeed the latest is 23. I only have the 22nd but my car came with 19 CIP and it already worked as yours is now described, I guess it is because you had your car from the first wave and me from before 2005 change. Good that now you can use all

I've had these features since as long as I can remember and the car is a June 2005 build.

38 is not correct.

What you describe is correct, and it's changes that come with 23.x

Mine is a 2003 build which probably had one of the earliest version of software that was ever shipped with the model when it went into production. I guess there's no surprise that a car which is only marginally newer than mine would have them given the rate at which new updates seem to be coming out.
