IT IS JUST A PAINT PROTECTOR for transport
that is just a protective layer of some kind of hard wax that is used for cars during transportation..... it will be removed/washed off at the dealer delivery. your car was most likely like this as well
this is used for many years by most of the car makers
you can see it on the regular E60 on right above the M5 as well

The Z4 Coupe models shown at some of the recent auto shows had special matt finish paint only in silver rather than black (and the paint finish got as many compliments as the car itself). Either way the matt finish looks cool. BMW should offer it. You might be on to something here! That car looks way too finished to be unpainted.

The "heavy primer" look is in now. Its a very flat finish, and hard to keep protected. I've seen quite few hot rods and one-offs with that finish. BTW, the M5 catalog of colors is beautiful. I never thought I would say this, but the brown is stunning.

Protective wax? Where do you guys get these crazy ideas?
Actually, it is the very first application of the "Invisibility Cloak" now being reported in the press (see link below). This M5's body is coated with 3 millimeter-thick metamaterial that provides police radar invisibility, which is why it looks like a matte finish.
