If it has increased fuel economy is has also lowered performance. If that's good news for you, then - congratulations!

I had issues with my iPOD NANO working via the USB. I forced a software re-boot by disconnecting the battery for over 20 minutes, but that did not solve the issue (- that's the normal first piece of advice the BMW Service guys give me). It went in for BMW Service to investigate and they couldn't work it out. A few days later, they received word from BMW Munich that it was a software issue and my E60 needed an upgrade to the latest software release. So they collected it this week, put a new software load in, and everything is great with the iPOD etc

However, what has me a little confused, is that the fuel economy has improved signficantly since the software upgrade. Its dropped from 8,6L/100km to 8,0L/100km. As I wrote above, I had forced a software reset by disconnecting the battery, which in turn reset the Fuel Economy board computer value. After doing my usual week's drive of around 1000km, including city, slow Dutch motorways and pedal to the boards autobahn, it went to the normal 8,6L/100km that I had had for some time before hand as well. BUT, after the software reload this week, I've done my usual 1000km drive again, and its at 8,0L/100km --- that's 0,6L/100km improvement without changing my route or driving style!

Could it be possible that the new software has enabled a more fuel efficient mix??
Can I suggest that you check the UNITS setting and ensure that the software upgrade has not changed it from US gals to Imperial / UK gals, as the latter are 10% larger and the indicated consumption reading would increase despite fuel being comsumed at the same rate. We often see people in the UK finding the setting wrong and consequently their cars are reporting very poor consumption figures.

Whatever would the size of a gallon have to do with this particular case?

hey xBMWx,

do you keep track of your fuel consumption on spritmonitor? I have been doing this, and check out my two profiles:

520dA: http://www.spritmonitor.de/de/detailansicht/267635.html

535dA: http://www.spritmonitor.de/de/detailansicht/237853.html

As you can see, I don't even see the consumption drop after 10k km that it should...

To your case, did you change tires recently?

best,
rumman

Hi Rsyed -- no I'm not doing the Spritmonitor. I have a company fuel card, so don't really focus too much on it. As to the other questions, the cars at around 44000km now and hadn't changed tyres. However this weekend I switched to my Winter Tyres, which are the same size as the Summer Tyres, but obviously with a different profile. So that may have an impact fuel consumption over the coming period?

Since my original post and before switching to winter tyres:
As I wrote originally, BEFORE the software upgrade I was at around 8,6 liters per 100km, written 8,6L/100km.
(We do not use gallons here in Germany, so the readings are not impacted by using different metrics, e.g. UK vs US gallons.)

AFTER the software upgrade my fuel consumption stayed at around 8,0L/100km, however I only drove the car for 2 weeks and did two of my usual journeys, which equates to around 2000km. I was then ill for about 4 weeks and my wife drove my car, which has dropped the consumption down to 7,6L/100km... no comment needed regading our different driving styles However since then I have been checking my fuel economy using the "Journey Board Computer", i.e. not the overall Board Computer consumption value, and its still at around the 8,0L mark instead of 8,6L/100km.

For now it does appear that the software upgrade MAY have helped. It MAY also simply be me being easier on the throttle than I was earlier in the year, without even realising -- it is afterall only a small 0,5L/100km improvement in fuel effciency

Unfortunately with me now changing to winter tyres, it won't be possible to compare apples with apples. I will however, continue to watch that number!
Maybe other members can monitor this as well if they get new a new software upgrade...
