Hey man i replaced my battery with an exact equivalent from pep boys, i did this a while ago so i cant remember but spec wise it was an exact match but from another company not OEM. There has been zero problems and no coding just simple drop in and replace. I have a 2006 550i btw. I would just go this route rather than dealer raping you.

I've thought about this, but some say that by not registering the new battery it will not last as long?

Not that difficult to reset the IBS when replacing battery with same type and spec. All you need is an laptop with XP or 32 bits Win7 along with the INPA program and cable (from ebay for about $99). There are instruction in bmwconding.com to show the basic coding steps. I replaced mine with Interstate MTP-H9 (same size, type and spec.) then I just reset the IBS with INPA.
